It is a beautiful place to visit. But it is on the Ring Road at least 4 hours from Reykjavik by car, so it is really an overnight trip. And it is not in the Golden Circle.

yes it is accessible but of course you have to wear proper bootwear like i wore anti slip ice grippers and held a stick.Enjoy!

How far of a drive is the falls from Akureyri? We are only there for 8 hours on cruise ship.

From the port it will be about a 41 minute drive one way. That's what google maps shows. Well worth the drive. Have a great time.
