Melissa is currently the only active tropical system in the Atlantic basin. As of Friday night, the storm remains nearly stationary, drifting north at just 2 mph. Maximum sustained winds are around 65 mph—just below the 75 mph threshold needed to reach Category 1 hurricane status.
The National Hurricane Center on Saturday tracked a Caribbean-bound system with a medium chance to develop into the season’s next tropical depression or storm.
All eyes will be on the Caribbean Sea for possible tropical development next week. The area currently has a 60% chance of development next week.
Melissa strengthened into a hurricane southeast of Jamaica and is set to rapidly grow, raising the risk for catastrophic flooding and wind damage across Jamaica and the Caribbean, where the storm has already killed at least four people.
