The NHC said in an 8 p.m. ET advisory on Friday, Oct. 24, that Melissa was located about 225 miles southwest of Port-Au-Prince and 190 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph with higher gusts.
As of 7 a.m. CDT Friday, the center of Tropical Storm Melissa was located about 185 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and was crawling to the east-southeast at 1 mph. Melissa had winds of 45 mph, making it a minimal tropical storm.
The National Hurricane Center's 11 p.m. Friday update reported that Tropical Storm Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 180 miles southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 245 miles southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. Packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, it is tracking northwest at 3 mph.
Forecasters warn that Tropical Storm Melissa could bring destructive winds and over 30 inches of rain to Jamaica as the storm edges closer to the island.
Cool front forecasts can be unreliable seven days in advance but AccuWeather is keen on low temps in the 60s for Nov. 1.
Tropical Storm Melissa is nearly stationary over the central Caribbean Sea. Significant intensification is expected this weekend, and Jamaica may see the worst of it.
