Poland and Romania are deploying a new weapons system to defend against Russian drones, following a spate of incursions into NATO airspace in recent months that exposed the alliance’s vulnerabilities and put Europe on edge.
Breaches of Romania's airspace by drones have become increasingly frequent in recent months as Russia targets Ukrainian Danube River ports just across the border. Officials have stated that samples collected from sites where drone fragments were found have been similar to those used by the Russian army.
Unmanned aerial vehicles were seen over the Doel nuclear power station in Belgium on Sunday, according to its operator.
Belgium is the latest target in a string of mysterious drone incidents across Europe, with some officials directly pointing the finger at Russia. It has left authorities scrambling to boost defences.
Minister Francken announced that Belgium will open a National Air Security Centre by January 1, 2026, to improve detection and tracking of unauthorized aerial vehicles. The government is also accelerating the purchase of jamming and interception equipment to counter drones operating near sensitive facilities.
Britain, France and Germany have announced that they will deploy anti-drone teams to Belgium after a wave of recent unidentified drone incursions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia is testing the integrity of European NATO allies with airspace violations using drones and senses "weakness," including fear of escalation of the war. "Any intellectual responses – precisely the kind Europe finds – read as weakness to Russia," Zelensky said in a post on X.
