Texas cannot require public schools in Houston, Austin and other select districts to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom, a judge said Wednesday in a temporary ruling against the state’s new requirement. Texas is the third state to have a Ten Commandments law blocked by a court.

The judge said the displays would violate parents' rights and are "likely to send an exclusionary and spiritually burdensome message" to students.

The national party is seeking to frame the quorum break as galvanizing event for Democrats. Texas Republicans are likely to pass the redistricted maps.

A Texas state lawmaker who spent the night on the floor of the Austin statehouse overnight into Aug. 19 plans to stay even longer as she refuses to accept a Republican order demanding all Democrats be monitored by police officers.

Texas Democrats have been in for a rough ride. After breaking quorum and coming back to the statehouse for the start of the second special legislative session, Democratic lawmakers were put under round-the-clock police escort to ensure they don't try to walk out again.
