An American Airlines flight bound for London was forced to land after severe turbulence injured two flight attendants. American Airlines Flight 174 took off from Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina just after 9 p.

The captain decided to return ‘due to the danger it posed to the safety of the flight’, the air traffic controller said.

KNXV-TV reported that the flight, which originated in Houston, had to land at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale when a ground stop came into effect for Phoenix Sky Harbor. In a statement, the airline said diverting to the base was the "safest course of action."
