The presence of Australian personnel on a US navy vessel that sank an Iranian ship in international waters has “dragged’ Australia into an “illegal war”, a Senator has warned. Anthony Albanese confirmed on Friday that three ADF personnel were on-board when the Iranian ship was attacked off the coast of Sri Lanka.

Australian sailors have been rotating on US Navy submarines out of Pearl Harbor as part of long-term preparations under the AUKUS partnership.

After considerable questioning, PM confirms three ADF personnel were on a US submarine that sank an Iranian warship.

Australia has taken another step along the AUKUS pathway with the arrival of the Royal Navy's Astute-class submarine HMS Anson at HMAS Stirling.

"South Australia is at the centre of one of the most significant defence undertakings in our history," Premier of South Australia Peter Malinauskas said in a press release.

The Albanese government also paid more than $300 million to buy equipment for the first AUKUS submarines as Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy visits Britain.
