MLB Division Series format, explained: Rules, number of games, history and more to know about ALDS and NLDS
MLB's Division Series is the second of four rounds in the postseason. Eight teams advance to the Division Series, four of which receive a bye by finishing with one of the top two seeds in their league. Only four of MLB's 12 playoff teams don't reach the Division Series.
There are eight teams still standing, which equals 16 possible World Series matchups, including a rematch of last year's World Series (Dodgers vs. Yankees). There has not been a World Series rematch since Dodgers vs. Yankees in 1977 and 1978.
There have been 39 winner-take-all Game 5s in Division Series history since the best-of-five series was added to the postseason docket in 1995, when MLB expanded to allow a Wild Card team from each league.
As of Sept. 24, the Phillies had the best odds of winning the World Series. BetMGM had them listed at +425 ahead of the Dodgers (+500), Mariners (+550) and the Brewers and Yankees (+750). There is a ton to like about the Phillies’ chances, starting with their powerful lineup, their extraordinary rotation and their impressive bullpen.
