By terminating them, I was able to delete the 'Microsoft' folder in Program Files (x86). In addition, many folders in the 'WindowsApps' folder in Program Files are also deleted.

The computer uses two specific Program File directories. If your 32-bit app is in the correct x86 folder, your computer will be able to access the correct 32-bit version.

Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\WORD.EXE'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
