Cole Caufield had two goals -- including the winner 44 seconds into overtime -- and an assist as the Montreal Canadiens responded after blowing a three-goal lead to defeat the host Seattle Kraken 4-3 on Tuesday.
The Kraken went 35-41-6 last season, seventh in the Pacific, and their .463 points percentage was tied with the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers for 27th in the NHL.
Jordan Eberle and Jani Nyman scored for Seattle, which snapped a season-opening five-game point streak (3-0-2). Joey Daccord gave up all five goals on 21 shots through two periods, and Philipp Grubaouer had six saves in the third.
The Kraken knocked off another team that usually has their number on Saturday night with Jordan Eberle scoring twice in a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
