Almost three months to the day when BYU coaches, fans and players alike were rattled by the bombshell news that projected and veteran starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff in all likelihood would not be under center for the Cougars in the Aug. 30 opener against Portland State, another somewhat startling development was announced in Provo.

BYU has named Bachmeier its starting quarterback, which would make him the first true freshman to start a season for the Cougars at the position. “He’s had a great camp and he’s our guy,” Cougars offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said Tuesday.

For the first time in BYU football history, a true freshman will be starting at quarterback at the beginning of the regular season. In a move many anticipated, BYU Offensive Coordinator Aaron Roderick announced to the media on Tuesday his decision to start Bear Bachmeier over both sophomore McCae Hillstead and junior Treyson Bourguet.
