The trophy was created and first presented in 1927 in memory of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Georges Vezina, who collapsed during an NHL game on Nov. 28, 1925.

From the 1980-81 season, the Vezina Trophy was awarded to goaltenders who played a minimum of 25 games for their team. No winner of the accolade in the last 10 years has exceeded 69 games played.
