The Republican governor on Wednesday ordered Texas agencies to help with arrests, share intelligence and help find new detainment facilities.

The administration rescinded its order for a spending review due to blowback. Republicans had not joined the chorus of critics, even though red states are heavily dependent on federal grants.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott deployed the troops to the Rio Grande Valley, where he said they'll work side-by-side with U.S. Border Patrol agents to keep migrants from illegally entering the country. Some of those troops left from the U.S. Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth Monday morning. The others left from a base in Houston.

It was a change from the Republican governor's legal battles with the Biden administration. Abbott spent the last four years testing a state's ability to enforce immigration law — at times at odds with Border Patrol.

Abbott, a fierce Trump ally, signed a series of executive orders to collaborate with the federal government in deportation efforts in the Lone Star State.

The Texas Senate Education Committee on Tuesday night voted to advance school voucher legislation for a full vote in the Senate after hours of public testimony largely focused on whether the proposal would live up to its promise of prioritizing low-income families and children with disabilities.

The Republican governor blamed the just-ended presidency of Democrat Joe Biden for the state having to step up to secure its border with Mexico.
