The most historic twister was the June 8, 1953 F-5 tornado that struck the Flint area and killed 116 people. Until the Joplin, MO tornado in May 2011, the Flint tornado was the last tornado to kill over 100 people in the U.S. The Palm Sunday 1965 tornado outbreak had four killer tornadoes, taking 51 lives in Michigan.

The storms hit a broad swath of the nation's midsection, spurring tornado warnings and watches from Iowa to Texas.

UPDATE 8:42 A.M.: As I was writing this article, the Storm Prediction Center issued an update on the tornado forecast. They removed the black hatching from Michigan, meaning they don’t expect a tornado of EF2 strength or stronger.
