India hasn’t given the country’s oil refiners instructions to stop buying Russian oil, according to people familiar, as officials grapple with meeting energy needs and maintaining ties with Moscow without further angering US President Donald Trump.

Both state-run and private refiners in India are allowed to buy from their preferred sources, and crude purchases remain a commercial decision.

Trump threatened 100% tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. Russia is the top supplier to India.
