The Boston Celtics secured their first win of the Eastern Conference semifinals and the Minnesota Timberwolves took a second-round series lead during Saturday night 2025 NBA playoffs action. The Celtics routed the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden to cut the Knicks' series lead to 2-1.
The second round has started out with a series of upsets on the road, showing things are even at the top of the NBA.
Sixteen teams in total make the NBA playoffs, eight teams from both the Eastern and Western Conference. The top six seeds in each conference advance based on the regular season record. The final two seeds in each conference are determined by the NBA Play-In Tournament.
All four rounds of the NBA playoffs are best-of-seven, and teams are not reseeded after each round. The team with the better regular-season record in each series will have home-court advantage for that series. All series are played in a 2-2-1-1-1 format, with the team with the better record hosting Games 1, 2, 5 and 7 (if necessary).
The regular-season rivalry wasn't very much of a rivalry, as the Celtics won all four matchups. Boston won the first three games by 23, 27 and 13 points, respectively, before taking the final showdown, 119-117, in overtime back on April 8 in New York.
