He went past Kohli's tally of 449 runs which he achieved during the Tour of Australia in 2014-15, having taken over the captaincy from MS Dhoni halfway into the series. He only led India in two matches.

Shubman Gill now holds the record for most runs in a debut Test series as India's captain. He surpassed Virat Kohli's previous record during the second Test against England. Gill scored 460 runs in four innings.
