The U.S. trade deficit narrowed in June on a sharp drop in consumer goods imports, the latest evidence of the imprint on global commerce President Donald Trump is making with sweeping tariffs on imported goods.

The U.S.'s international trade deficit in goods and services narrowed to -$60.2B in June from -$71.7B in the prior month, compared with the -$62.6B consensus, according to data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis released on Tuesday.

The deterioration in goods trade is likely to have weighed heavily on Canada’s economy in the April to June period, as shipments of items from cars to metals targeted by protectionist U.S. policies slumped. And while exports to the U.S., by far Canada’s largest market, advanced in June, that was due mainly to higher oil prices.
