The largest Antebellum mansion in the South, dating back to 1859, has been destroyed by a fire. The fire at Nottoway Plantation in White Castle, LA —just outside Baton Roug e—broke out around 2pm on Thursday, May 15 and reduced the 160-year-old landmark to rubble.

The largest pre-Civil War mansion in all of the American South burned to the ground as a devastating fire ripped through the historic wooden structure built nearly 200 years ago.

The fire that engulfed the Nottoway Plantation House on Thursday devastated the building along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle said on social media. Nearly a dozen fire departments from surrounding towns battled the blaze, he said. No injuries were reported.
