It’s likely that we’ve reached the end of the spider mite life cycle, but without treatment these plants would’ve been a complete loss. Which, proves the method using predatory mite to fight back. Next piece of the puzzle, timing. Getting the beneficial mites in place before the red spider mite takes hold, that will be key for future success. I’m not sure we’ll have enough for veg boxes, maybe in a few weeks, but certainly they’ll be enough for our markets, and @remedybymungbean AND @thepearincl

The world gets better when we make it that way. This single bed of cosmos and sunflowers was planted to separate our courgettes from the squash, if you’ve grown squash you’ll know why that’s important. However, it has unexpectedly provided a great source of income and joy. The sale of the flowers means I was able to share some of this with you at home, they’ve give our insects and birds food and habitat all summer and will continue to do so until winter. All of which is very satisfactory. So lon

This was a little experiment. I wanted to see what would happen if I direct sow spinach into a tunnel in October. Asides from the obvious lack of attention to detail on the weeding and the watering, this has turned out well. This coming autumn I will drill a larger area in October, with the aim of getting a cropping in February/March 2027. Seems like a long game just for some spinach, but having a diverse range of crops throughout the year is the key to us remaining profitable 52 weeks of the ye

Healthy soil, healthy ecosystems, healthy crops, fewer inputs, more money. It seems contrary to the convention, which is currently humans OR nature, but the reality is, there is no separation, this is one system and must act as soon. It doesn’t really matter if you agree…time will reveal all. You never know, I might be wrong and it’ll turn out we don’t need a healthy functioning natural world after all… | Sunshine and Green

This applies to small scale farms, allotments and even large scale farms using mechanical weed control. Make sure it’s not going to rain, or you don’t need to water, for at least 24-48 hours after hoeing. Particularly on heavy clays soils like these, even tiny plants will cling onto a rootball for a day or two…you really need to give it the best chance of drying out as possible! | Sunshine and Green

The fact that they were trying to prevent a farmer from selling direct tells you all you need to know. I don’t know many farms are in contracts like this, but I bet there’s a few…now you know why they’re protesting. We must help break them free and disrupt this system before it becomes further monopolised and centralised.Food must really independent and in the hands of the many.We are a threat…keep going! | Sunshine and Green

This shouldn’t be controversial, but I somehow think it might ruffle some feathers. The way farm businesses are funded is changing fast, there’s no way yield can keep up with rising costs of inputs and a dramatic drop in government funding. Actually, food is no longer subsidised AT ALL!! Those who spend their time chasing money that no longer exists, or try to use their farming skills/land area to attempt to out produce the lack of funding and input costs will be left behind. Change is scary, bu

Seriously, a little bit of damage is ok…but we still seek perfection! Sometimes things get through and you’ll find some pests on your vegetables, we do our best and I’m generally pleased with the quality. On a side note, no one understands why farmers use chemicals, better than an organic grower! | Sunshine and Green

If the thing you sell is safe, why behave that way? I lied a lot at as a teenager, I did it when I had something to hide. I’m a grown up now, if I do a bad thing I’ll admit it. So, are these chemicals safe? Maybe? But why the lies, bullying and gaslighting? Why pay someone to shut up? | Sunshine and Green

This bloody stuff!! I know of one farm that dropped their organic license, temporarily, to get rid of creepy thistles. I’m going to manage it with steel, but it is a relentless competitor. Like the mythical Hydra, chop one head and six more come back. It’s not a problem to certain crops, so long as you can get your crops established, crops like brassicas and squash, once growing well will easily grow around the thistles. Harvest becomes painful though. Onions, you really need to keep the thistle

The biggest secret no one speaks about, there’s no magic, no hack, no short cut. It’s really hard, takes work and patience but, the truth is bringing your dreams into reality is really simple. I know this, because I’m an average person, no particular skills or knowledge, just the desire to try. This video was never finished, I was too sad by the loss and it took ages to sort and wash each and every remaining squash… After spending hours going through them checking for damage, then a further hour or washing the remaining good ones I was a little deflated. I stopped filming just after this part, wasn’t even sure I should share it, might put customers off. But then, well, this is a true story so thought it best to share. Next year’s squash will be locked in a sealed container!! Voles are

This represents the high water mark of a busy year. The missed hopes and aspirations, the “I’ll put it there and sort it laters”, the quiet back ground anxiety “I hope no one sees this mess! Anyway, the farm is buttoned up for winter, winter projects are underway and jobs like sorting this mess out will provide some lovely inclement weather day activities.
