☀️ #SolarFlare This Eruption on the Solar Limb (lower right) is from May 2022 and is seen in AIA 304 Angstrom filter. Correction is applied for the instrument Point-Spread Function (PSF). Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) operates in a geosynchronous orbit around Earth to obtain a continuous view of the Sun. The particular instrument in this visualization records imagery in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum at wavelengths normally absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere - so we need to observe them

IRIS Sees Plasma Suspension Above the Solar Limb March 3/2018 As seen in February 2015. Giant walls of plasma, prominences, are often seen suspended above the solar limb. The invisible magnetic field holds the structure stable against gravity, in some cases for several days. In comparison, tiny spicules can be seen roaring on the solar face. Disturbances in the magnetic field and instabilities will eventually lead the structures to erupt as spectacular coronal mass ejections. Such a stable promi

• Solar Flare on Eastern Limb - Wavelength - 304 Angstroms 22.5.2020 • This close-up of the Sun from a four-hour period on 11.2.2014 shows a minor eruption of charged particles rising up and twisting about before falling back into the Sun. Imaged in extreme ultraviolet light (304 Angstroms) these kinds of events are difficult to see except when they occur along the sun's edge, also known as the limb. At its peak the plasma rises several times the diameter of Earth. • Credit: Solar Dynamics Obser

Wednesday Night Solar IRIS: Powerful Flare at the Solar Limb 25/07/2018 In September 2017 IRIS observes the outcome of a large flare at the solar limb. The flare itself, in the far left at the beginning of this movie, was barely covered by IRIS. However, moments later the whole limb "lights up" because the flare causes extreme heating. In time, more structures are seen above the limb, starting with a diffuse cloud of plasma at millions of degrees and later curled magnetic field loops are visible

A closer look at a large eruption behind the northeast limb of the Sun early Thursday morning (Oct 30) at 04:15 UTC. The source region will begin to turn into view this weekend. Video courtesy of GOES SUVI, SDO/AIA and LASCO C2. | Space Weather by SolarHam

A prominence located off the southeast limb which had been spinning around the past 12 hours finally lifted off. Although some of the plasma appears to have been reabsorbed, a CME is now becoming visible in the latest coronagraph imagery courtesy of LASCO. Other than putting on a show for solar observers, it should be directed away from our planet with no impacts expected. Video courtesy of GOES SUVI. SolarHam.com | Space Weather by SolarHam

🌞 M4.5 Solar Flare Strikes East Limb 🌍 At 05:23 UTC a new sunspot rotating into view erupted with an M4.5 solar flare. The blast spiked X-rays and caused shortwave radio fadeouts on the sunlit side of Earth. Any plasma cloud should pass to the side due to the limb location. But this region is just now turning toward Earth and it is already active. Stronger flares are possible in the coming days. #SolarFlare #SpaceWeather #Sunspot #Aurora #AboveTheNormNews | Above The Norm News

Sunspot region 3664 is now behind the west limb, firing of an X3.4 solar flare as she leaves the stage... and yet another X-flare pops of at 14:38 UTC peaking at X2.9! But... surprise...! This solar flare wasn't from sunspot region 3664 but an unnumbered sunspot region on the east limb! Wow, is there yet another major flare player about to appear? IRIS • Off Limb Plasma 14.1.26 • The Sun's magnetic fields were clearly visible in this brilliant display of solar activity surrounding a C3.4-class flare in Feb/2025. Although the source (NOAA Active Region 13998) had already rotated over the Sun's edge, we can still see plasma flowing along arching and twisting magnetic field lines extending from it. The sequence ends with a beautiful example of coronal rain, as superheated plasma cools and falls back toward the solar surface. •• Credit: IRIS,

Our Sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite captured these views of a brilliant solar flare and eruption of material on Nov. 29. https://go.nasa.gov/3omyP1W From its foot point over the limb, some of the light and energy was blocked from reaching Earth – a little like seeing light from a lightbulb with the bottom half covered up. Also visible in the imagery is an eruption of solar material that achieved escape velocity and moved out into space as a giant cloud of gas and magnetic field

I took one of my coolest solar images ever with my Lunt 100MT telescope. This eruptive prominence stretched 180,000 km above the Sun's limb. You can see how tiny the Earth is in comparison. Tag a friend! #sun #solarimaging #space #Earth #telescope | Azastroguy

Here is a fantastic video by GOES SUVI capturing an eruption behind the southwest limb on Friday. This resulted in a southerly directed coronal mass ejection (CME) that is traveling away from our planet. SolarHam.com | Space Weather by SolarHam
