The creators based many of the most awkward moments directly on their own real-life school experiences, which is why the humor feels painfully authentic. A lot of the jokes that seem exaggerated were actually toned down versions of things that really happened in British secondary schools. Even more surprising, the cast was older than their characters, but the show deliberately avoided the polis
