After a 15 month gestation, a female giraffe (also known as a cow), will give birth to a single calf. The mother giraffe remains on her feet during the entire birthing process. Within 30 minutes, a newborn calf can stand on its wobbly legs, usually running and walking after a couple of hours. The smell of the afterbirth, which is what you can see falling to the ground, attracts predators and puts a lot of pressure on the mother and baby to move quickly away from the birthing site.
