Silver City sprang up out of the Owyhee Mountains when silver and gold was discovered there in the 1860s. For nearly three decades it thrived as one of the biggest mountain mining towns in southern Idaho. When the precious metals dried up, the people moved out and by World War 2 it was all but abandoned. The historic Ghost Town of Chesterfield, Idaho, established 1880. The roads, houses, and hills were blanketed in thick snow, casting an eerie quiet in the town and a hard crunch under my boots. Being the only two people there, it felt hallowed and ghostly, especially with the steady groaning of the windmill in the background. There was just enough breeze that kept the blades turning the whole time - metal slowly scrubbing against metal like a rusty sentinel keeping a careful watch over its land.
